French lawmakers vote to slow down fast fashion with penalties

France’s parliament on Thursday backed a string of measures making low-cost fast fashion, especially from Chinese mass producers, less attractive to buyers.

The vote makes France the first country in the world “legislating to limit the excesses of ultra fast fashion”, said Christophe Bechu, minister for the ecological transition.

Key measures include a ban on advertising for the cheapest textiles, and an environmental charge slapped on low-cost items.

The French clothes market has been flooded with cheap imported clothes, while several homegrown brands have declared bankruptcy.

Shopping Monsters is distributed by Istanbul-based Global Agency

Fashion competition format Shopping Monsters is set to premiere on Canal+ in Francophone Africa from March 25.

The daytime show, developed in Turkey and distributed by Istanbul-based Global Agency, combines the elements of competition, gossip, makeovers and style.

Canal+ airs across 25 African countries in French, counting some 8.1 million subscribers and also owns more than 35% of African pay TV operator MultiChoice. Global Agency confirmed to C21 that Canal+ has produced a local version of the format for African audiences.

Fashion designer Dries Van Noten to step down from name brand

Belgian designer Dries Van Noten, who for almost four decades dazzled the fashion world with his luscious use of colors and fabrics, said Tuesday he will step down as creative director of his namesake brand at the end of June.

Van Noten, 65, a master of blending the old with the new, said in a statement that the 2025 men’s Spring-Summer collection will be the last in his current role. He added that the women’s collection will be designed by his studio.

Van Noten’s successor will be announced at a later stage, he said.
