Fashion competition format Shopping Monsters is set to premiere on Canal+ in Francophone Africa from March 25.
The daytime show, developed in Turkey and distributed by Istanbul-based Global Agency, combines the elements of competition, gossip, makeovers and style.
Canal+ airs across 25 African countries in French, counting some 8.1 million subscribers and also owns more than 35% of African pay TV operator MultiChoice. Global Agency confirmed to C21 that Canal+ has produced a local version of the format for African audiences.
The Shopping Monsters makeover competition series has so far sold into 40 countries, including Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Morocco and Latvia, with M6 in France and Vox TV in Germany having aired thousands of episodes.
The format sees five women from different backgrounds engage in a four-hour shopping marathon every week, aiming to be the best dressed on a strict budget of US$1,000, with their fellow competitors as the judges.
The women are to make use of their limited budget, be stylish according to the weekly theme, comply with the concept of the week and score the highest points all within a four-hour time limit amid “plenty of gossip and backstabbing,” according to Global Agency.
