Like previous years, 2023 is also full of viral moments coming from the realm of fashion. Not a few of them have intrigued the public or sparked controversy.

From royals’ styles that ended in hilarious memes to advertisements that drew pro-Palestinian criticism, here are 10 viral fashion moments that enlivened conversation on social media this year.

After releasing ‘devil’ shoes which caused a stir, MSCHF is again offering a unique product in early 2023. Named Big Red Boots, this footwear resembles the shoes of the Japanese manga character Astro Boy.

In early February, news emerged that MSCHF would sell Big Red Boots for US$ 350 or Rp. 5.3 million. However, the resulting euphoria makes these shoes many times more expensive in hand resellers. Evidently, the offering price on StockX at that time increased manifold to reach US$ 1,000.

Kate Middleton has once again confirmed her status as the queen of ‘recycled’ style. At the star-studded BAFTA 2023 event, she wore her old white Alexander McQueen dress which was remade so it looked new. Not only that, cheap earrings from Zara further enhance her style.

Her appearance is highly anticipated because BAFTA 2023 will be Kate’s first as Princess of Wales. Not only that, he also appeared in the midst of the controversy over Prince Harry’s biography book. Once again, Kate did not disappoint.

Pope Francis was flooded with praise after a photo of his appearance in a thick white jacket went viral on social media. However, it turns out that the photo was just discovered to be the result of editing by artificial intelligence technology, aka AI.

Already viral, searches for the keyword ‘pope’ or whale have increased sharply according to Google Trends. Forbes reported that many people were looking for the ‘Balenciaga Pope’ after allegations emerged that the 86-year-old man was wearing products from the Balenciaga fashion house.

5. Queen Letizia’s hat becomes a meme

European royal events usually require female guests to wear hats or what are usually called fascinators. So it is not surprising that the coronation of King Charles III last May became a kind of competition for the best hat styles. Queen Letizia of Spain chose something that went viral on social media.

The hat is made of woven material with lace accents and is shaped like a large, inverted bowl. On X (formerly Twitter), various reactions and hilarious memes emerged for Queen Letizia’s headdress. Some say it looks like a samurai hat and Raiden’s hat, one of the characters in the game Mortal Kombat.

6. Jared Leto’s costume at the MET Gala

Jared Leto successfully stole attention at the MET Gala 2023 thanks to his choice of costume. The actor wore a giant cat costume that resembled Choupette, the white cat belonging to the late Karl Lagerfeld.
